The Bloody Truth’s Definitive List of Serial Killer Films

Serial killer films are great so here’s a list of the very best.

1. Zodiac

David Fincher’s Zodiac tells the true story of the search for a serial killer named the “Zodiac” who committed a series of murders around the San Franciscos Bay Area in the 60’s and 70’s. The case remains unsolved to this day. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey, Jr.

2. The Silence of the Lambs

Silence of the lambs

The Silence of the Lambs, directed by Jonathon Demme, stars Jodie Foster as F.B.I Agent Clarice Starling and Anthony Hopkins as the iconic Hannibal Lecter. The film follow Clarice as she seeks out advice from an imprisoned Lecter in order to find the active serial killer, “Buffalo Bill”.

3. Se7en

Se7en is a 1995 neo-noir crime thriller directed by David Fincher. The film has been praised for its dark brutality and themes as it chronicles Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt) and Detective Lieutenant William Somerset’s (Morgan Freeman) hunt for the serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who has based his killings on the seven deadly sins.

4. American Psycho

American Psycho

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name, American Psycho is a black comedy that stars Chritian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street investment banker and serial killer.

5. Manhunter

Manhunter

Manhunter has become somewhat of a cult film after it failed to make an impact at the box office on its initial release. Based on the novel Red Dragon, it was the first of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter novels to garner a film adaptation. It stars CSI‘s William Petersen as the F.B.I profiler Will Graham and Brian Cox as Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

6. Natural Born Killers

Micky Knox (Woody Harrelson) and Mallory Knox (Juliette Lewis) are serial killer who become glorified by the media after committing a number of murders. They kill almost everyone they come into contact with, without so much as a second thought. The film has notoriously been criticised for it graphic violence and subsequent has become one of the most controversial films to ever be released. It’s definitely not a film for the faint-hearted.

It’s also recommended that you don’t eat before or after watching this film.

7. Monster

Monster

Monster is based on real life serial killer, Aileen Wuornos, who murdered seven men in Florida whilst she worked as a prostitute. The film stars Charlize Theron as Wuornos who went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role.

8. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

Henry

Henry has long been subject to heavy censorship due to its insane graphic violence subsequently it ended up being banned in New Zealand and was heavily cut in the UK. It’s loosely based on serial killer Henry Lee Lucas who claimed to have murdered over 3000 people although it was later discovered that these were mostly false confessions. It stars Michael Rooker who you wil recognise as playing the scene-stealer Yondu Udonta in Guardians of the Galaxy, a far cry from his breakout role as Henry.

I would also avoid eating with the memory of this film still in your head.
